Step on it: asymmetric gain functions improve starting and stopping in virtual reality walking

چکیده
Abstract Transfer functions with a high translational gain can increase the range of walking in virtual reality. These determine how much movements are amplified compared to corresponding physical movements. However, it is unclear design these influences user’s gait and experience when values. In mixed-methods study 20 users, we find that their best transfer nonlinear asymmetrical for starting stopping. We use an optimization approach individually optimized significantly better than common using constant gain. Based on interviews, also discuss what qualities matter users vary across different functions. Our work shows possible create high-gain techniques offer dramatically increased motion speed but still feel like normal walking.

Walking in an Immersive Virtual Reality
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on gait induced by a completely immersive Virtual Reality (VR) with and without perturbation. Ten healthy subjects were analyzed during over-ground walking in different conditions: standard gait, VR gait and perturbed VR gait. Results showed that subjects immersed in the virtual environment walked slowly, with decreased cadence (-13%) and str...
متن کاملVirtual Reality and Musculoskeletal Pain: Manipulating Sensory Cues to Improve Motor Performance During Walking
Musculoskeletal pain (MSP) is the most expensive nonmalignant health problem and the most common reason for activity limitation. Treatment approaches to improve movement without aggravating pain are urgently needed. Virtual reality (VR) can decrease acute pain, as well as influence movement speed. It is not clear whether VR can improve movement speed in individuals with MSP without aggravating ...
متن کاملCan walking motions improve visually induced rotational self-motion illusions in virtual reality?
Illusions of self-motion (vection) can provide compelling sensations of moving through virtual environments without the need for complex motion simulators or large tracked physical walking spaces. Here we explore the interaction between biomechanical cues (stepping along a rotating circular treadmill) and visual cues (viewing simulated self-rotation) for providing stationary users a compelling ...
متن کاملWalking Pattern Simulation based on Virtual Reality Toolbox
This paper presents the simulation of humanoid walking pattern using 3D simulator with Virtual Reality Toolbox. 3D simulator is essential for developing motion planning and navigation algorithm. By using the Virtual Reality Toolbox incorporated with MATLAB, it is easy and simple to handle 3D objects. Detailed program architecture is explained through a pseudo code. In addition, modifiable walki...
